Carrollton’s Northern Shell Gas Station to Hop Highway 27

Kevin Hemphill

The Highway 27 Shell gas station in Carrollton is set to change lanes in the coming months. Currently located Highway 27 southbound, the station plans to move into the property directly across from them to access the heavier, northbound traffic.

You may recall that this property across the highway contains a dated but unique structure–a Quonset hut, which is a lightweight, prefabricated structure of corrugated, galvanized steel having a semi-cylindrical cross-section. The design was developed in the United States, based on the Nissen hut introduced by the British during World War I.

Originally home to Addison Smith Mechanical Contractor, Inc., and later a sports store when Mark Newman and Kathy Waldrop owned it, the building has changed hands several times before being abandoned, many locals have reported.

The Shell station expects to demolish the old building and set up shop in the coming year or so.
